What Are ADA & Braille Signs?

ADA (Americans with Disabilities Act) signage ensures buildings are accessible and navigable for people with visual impairments or physical limitations. These signs feature raised tactile letters, Grade 2 Braille, and high‑contrast colors that make them easy to read and identify.

Our signs comply fully with ADA Section 703 regulations covering size, typeface, mounting height, and contrast, guaranteeing that your facility not only complies with law but also reflects care for every visitor.

About ADA-Compliant Signs

ADA-compliant signs are permanent room and wayfinding signs that meet the technical requirements of Section 703 of the 2010 ADA Standards for Accessible Design — including tactile raised lettering, grade 2 braille, non-glare finish, minimum contrast, and specific mounting height — required in virtually every commercial, healthcare, educational, and government facility in Florida. We fabricate and install ada-compliant signs for commercial clients across Jacksonville, Jacksonville Beach, Ponte Vedra Beach, Orange Park, St. Augustine, and the broader Northeast Florida region. Our in-house fabrication and licensed installation teams handle the complete project from design through installation, and our team coordinates any required City of Jacksonville permits so clients never navigate municipal processes themselves. Every project is backed by the Signworld Business Owner's Alliance, a national network of 260+ independently owned sign companies with more than 25 years of combined industry experience, and by our active memberships in the International Sign Association and the Northeast Florida Builders Association.

What makes a sign ADA compliant?

A sign is ADA compliant only when it meets all six technical requirements of Section 703 of the 2010 ADA Standards for Accessible Design. First, tactile characters — raised letters at least 1/32 inch above the surface, with specific proportions for height and width. Second, grade 2 braille — contracted braille (not grade 1 uncontracted), with specific dot size and spacing. Third, character proportions and height — minimum 5/8-inch character height for tactile signs. Fourth, non-glare finish — matte or satin surfaces only, never glossy. Fifth, contrast — at least 70 percent light reflectance difference between the characters and the background. Sixth, mounting — on the latch side of the door at 48 to 60 inches from the floor to the baseline of the lowest tactile character.

What happens if my signs are not ADA compliant?

Non-compliant ADA signs are a Title III violation of the Americans with Disabilities Act and can trigger Department of Justice investigations, private lawsuits, and civil penalties. Florida has seen hundreds of ADA-related Title III lawsuits filed against commercial property owners, and non-compliant signage is one of the most frequently cited violations. Beyond legal risk, non-compliant signs exclude visitors with disabilities from fully participating in your space — a brand and ethical issue in addition to a legal one. The practical fix is straightforward: audit existing signage, identify non-compliant signs (wrong mounting height, glossy finish, insufficient contrast, missing or incorrect braille, wrong placement), and replace them with compliant versions. Duval Sign Solutions offers ADA compliance audits for existing facilities.
